Jazz band playing instruments on stage

Ainslie and Gorman Arts Centres is excited to be bringing experimental jazz ensemble Way Out West to Canberra as part of their national tour. Led by daring trumpeter/composer Peter Knight (Artistic Director of the Australian Art Orchestra), Way Out West’s latest, self-titled album features koto virtuoso, Satsuki Odamura and won the 2016 Age/Music Victoria ‘Jazz Album of the Year’ along with rave reviews including four and a half stars in The Australian.

Way Out West is at the vanguard of an important musical movement that engages with Australia’s place in Asia to produce a unique hybrid form of jazz. Their sound – which integrates, Asian, African, and jazz influences – has been described as “utterly unique” and has earned the band a loyal local following as well as invitations to play some of the largest music festivals in the world.
