APT7 Artist Profile – Edwin Roseno

Edwin ROSENO, Indonesia b.1979, Lucky bamboo (Dracaena) (from ‘Green hypermarket’ series) 2011–1. Digital colour print on aluminium / 40cm (diam.)

PERIL: Can you describe some of the artworks you are exhibiting at APT7?

EDWIN:
Green Hypermarket is my escapade in catching a sight of the simple yet real practices found among Indonesians of utilizing used packaging of instant food and beverages as planting media. Whether it is done consciously or not, it has somehow reserved ‘the commercial value’ of those disposable packagings by transforming them into part of the green elements around the house.

Green Hypermarket consists of two stages in its process:

Firstly, experiencing it myself as a part of an environmentally aware society by recycling the disposables into a planting media, followed by growing various plants in them.

Secondly, embracing society’s accomplishment; to become an environmental defender in smaller scope as a form of social interaction and identical behavior towards the society.

PERIL: What are some of the ideas behind your art practice?

EDWIN: The ideas behind my art prctice is to record or document creative and inspiring approach existing within the society, thus to be regarded as a humble yet essential knowledge. Will serve the purpose as one of the great photography documentations on unique and ‘intimate friendship’ between the instant/packaging world and the nature/environment; it is the sign and proof that nature balance relies on us, the inhabitants of the Earth.

PERIL: Can you discuss your depiction of the natural world with product branding and consumer culture?

Edwin Roseno, b.1979, Banyuwangi, Indonesia
Lives and works in Yogyakarta, Indonesia

EDWIN: See it (the natural world) emerges from the responsible & smart attitude of the consumptive human being; by reusing and reprocessing his/her consumption waste into containers to grow plants. The brand itself is not worthy of attention, the main point is each brand transforms into a media where the plant can grow. That’s all.
