Peril Visual Arts news: Farewell, Owen Leong! Welcome Nikki Lam

Peril newsAt Peril, we’re sad to announce that after six years as Peril‘s Visual Arts Editor, Owen Leong has decided to step down from his position.

Through Owen’s wonderful curation, Peril has benefited and grown from his input, not only are we an online literary magazine, we also present a dynamic visual arts archive with work from across Asia  and Australia.

As Visual Arts editor, Owen was instrumental in how we realised our issue themes and content.  One of the exciting features that Owen introduced to Peril was a series of video interviews that he conducted (with the help of artist Shoufay Derz as camera person) featuring Australian and international artists at the 7th Asia-Pacific Triennial of Contemporary Art (APT7) in Brisbane last year.  Artists that he interviewed included Daniel Boyd, Michael Cook, Edwin Roseno and Tintin Wulia.

In addition, through Owen’s careful curation, the words and powerful artworks of internationally acclaimed artists like Shoufay Derz , Shigeyuki Kihara, Matt Huynh, Vipoo Srivalasa and Gary Lee have been featured in Peril.

Peril would like to send our heartfelt thanks to Owen Leong, a wonderful editor, artist and curator, and wish him the very best as he embarks on his PhD and future exhibitions.  To follow Owen’s news, please visit him at his website: Owen Leong

However, like any news, there are two sides to the story.  Our very good news is that we welcome Nikki Lam into our fold. (Check out Owen’s interview with Nikki in Peril #17 )  Nikki is a visual artist-curator who is Melbourne based, and recently returned from FACT (Foundation for Art and Creative Technology) in UK.  She curates a hybrid project called The Curious Other, exploring the online space for independent and unconventional curatorial practice.  She also very recently completed her Executive Master of Arts degree at The University of Melbourne!

Welcome Nikki!  We’re excited to see how the visual arts archive that Owen has nurtured in Peril continues to grow and develop with Nikki’s curation and ideas.
