MGA is the exclusive Australian venue for this major exhibition of Chinese photography. Developed by the Shanghai Centre of Photography (SCôP), the exhibition offers an intriguing insight into the role that photography has played in the evolution of Chinese culture over the past 150 years, from early ethnographic photography and communist propaganda through to the internationally acclaimed work of contemporary Chinese artists. Following its launch at MGA, China: grain to pixel will continue on a global tour that includes venues in Belgium and Russia. China: grain to pixel is a ‘must see’ exhibition for anyone interested in the past and future of visual culture in China.

Queensland Poetry Festival: Lost Language Found

Lost Language Found, the theme for this year's Queensland Poetry Festival, is a four-day festival held in the last week in August. QPF also curates and administers the Arts Queensland Poetry Awards, the Arts Queensland Poet in Residence Program, the Indigenous Poet in Residence, the Brisbane Poetry Map, and the Queensland Heats & Final of the Australian Poetry Slam. While a number of events will be held at the Judith Wright Centre of Contemporary Arts, making it easier to hop from one event to another, a few events will be held at satellite locations. Of note: Archie Roach in concert, a possible screening of Beyoncé's Lemonade, and Beautiful Bones - a showcase of Indigenous Australian poetry featuring 2016 Indigenous poet in residence, Sam Wagan Watson.

Feminist Writers Festival

The Feminist Writers Festival will bring together feminist writers and readers to connect and strengthen the diverse writing communities that exist around Australia. The festival will expand the themes and voices around feminism and women’s writing by offering a space for critical engagement and practical support for all feminist writers and readers. Hosted in partnership with the Melbourne Writers Festival, the 2016 Feminist Writers Festival will hold a workshop and networking day on Friday 26 August at the Queen Victoria Women’s Centre. This will be followed by public events, co-hosted by the Melbourne Writers Festival, on Saturday 27 and Sunday 28 August at Federation Square and Footscray Community Arts Centre.

This lecture will focus attention on the living and working conditions of hereditary musicians and courtesans in colonial Bombay and the resilience they displayed in the most trying of circumstances. Discussion will connect contemporary developments in Hindustani music with these profound historical issues and will include Dr Aneesh Pradhan’s personal reflections as a performer and researcher.
