#blasphemy! Free Speech in the Asia-Pacific

DWFThe Digital Writers Festival is upon us for 2015!

In this, the festival’s second year, the DWF team are bringing you another suite of events, conversations and digital play spaces that consider writing, ideas and creativity online. Festival Director, Connor Tomas O’Brien recently shared his thoughts on the full program, outlining what it is that they feel makes this festival special, while launching the full program.

As a part of the DWF, Peril Editor in Chief, Eleanor Jackson, will be participating in this exciting and timely panel, titled #blasphemy! Free Speech in the Asia-Pacific. At 3pm AEDT, you will be able to join the online discussion. The DWF and panelists will be keen to know:

When it comes to freedom of speech, just how much is too much and how much is too little? Should we redefine freedom of expression or is it fine just the way it is? What is the role of censorship in an age where almost everyone is connected to each other and everyone has access — as well as the ability — to create content?

Participants include:

  • Sunili Govinnage – Human Rights Lawyer, researcher, writer and editor who grew up in Perth.
  • Andre Dao – a writer of fiction and non-fiction, editor-at-large of Right Now, a human rights media organisation, and was the Editor of The Emerging Writer for the 2013 Emerging Writer’s Festival.
  • Ross Tapsell researches the media in Indonesia and Malaysia. He is author of the book ‘Bylines, Balibo, Bali Bombings: Australian Journalists in Indonesia’ (ASP, 2015)
  • Eleanor Jackson, Editor in Chief and Poetry Editor, Peril Magazine. She is a radio broadcaster with 4ZZZ and currently artist in residence at La Boite Theatre, Brisbane.

You can attend all DWF events from home, using your own computer and web connection! DWF events will be livestreamed at digitalwritersfestival.com.
