“Sounding Langshi: Mountain was made in the karst mountains of Langshi Village, Guilin, in Southern China. Sounds of paper on rock were bounced against karst formations to articulate my bodily engagement with a familiar trope of Chinese landscape painting. Sound feedback recordings and paper mediators evidence this entanglement between my body and place. The drawing process harnessed the unique acoustics of the site to create a sonic drawing whereby the line of gesture is contained in the line of sound.”

“As the piece contained organic matter, Australian Biosecurity and The Department of Agriculture had the work quarantined and examined by plant pathology upon my return to Sydney. It was subsequently gamma irradiated and any potentially living contaminants destroyed. What began as an inquiry into embodied drawing, listening and sounding, came to exemplify some questions surrounding my own global mobility. In negotiating with authorities who have the power to determine the conditions of my emplacement, how much autonomy do I really have in shaping my own cultural and political belonging? And to what extent could my body and actions potentially shift the borders of places I traverse?”

Cindy Yuen-Zhe Chen is a Sydney based artist who uses experimental drawing and sound practice to explore processes of embodied listening. Her drawing practice examines circumstantial experience and engages with the dynamic line of sound which has no form. She explores how perceptual engagement engenders connection and uses drawing to enact her unfolding relationships with places. As the recipient of the University Postgraduate Award, Chen is currently undertaking a Doctor of Philosophy in Art, Design and Media at the University of New South Wales Art and Design.

With work held in private and public collections, Chen has exhibited in Australia and China in solo, group and finalist prize exhibitions. In December 2018, Chen held a solo exhibition and undertook an artist residency at Ningbo Museum of Art, China. In 2017, Chen was selected to exhibit in Beijing’s Today Art Museum as a part of Art Nova 100. She was a finalist in the Paddington Art Prize in 2015 and a finalist for the 61st Blake Prize in 2012. Chen has also undertaken artist residencies at Akiyoshidai International Art Village in Japan and in Hill End, through Bathurst Regional Gallery.
