Yum Chat – BrisAsia Festival

BrisAsia2Last year, Peril Blogger, Ellie Freeman, shared her responses to the BrisAsia Festival event Yum Chat, which brought together arts professionals and members of the interested public to discuss art and culture in a kind of creative “speed-dating”.

This year, this Brisbane City Council initiative, once again celebrates Brisbane’s connections with Asia during BrisAsia Festival from Friday 6 February to Sunday 1 March 2015.

As the Council outlines:

BrisAsia Festival features traditional and contemporary Asian arts and cultural events across Brisbane. It profiles the work of local artists that identify with Asian heritage and promotes other Asian events held in our local communities. BrisAsia Festival aims to strengthen awareness of Asian culture in Brisbane through a series of events and hands on workshops, including Yum Chat, Chinese New Year, Neon Pop and Taste of Asia. Experience, express and explore Asian culture in Brisbane.

This year the Council is revamping Yum Chat to feature a keynote address from Quan Yeomans (of Regurgitator Fame), panel discussion featuring Eleanor Jackson (Peril Editor in Chief), Audrey Lam (Filmmaker), Joyce Ho (Motion Designer), Merlynn Tong (Writer and Performer) and Faramarz K-Rahbar (Filmmaker) and information for artists. Hosted by writer, Michelle Law, participants are then invited to stay on and enjoy music by Deena whilst meeting fellow Brisbane artists and enjoying nibbles and a drink.

Details are as follows, and while the event is free, registration is very much preferred:

  • Dates: 17 Feb 2015
  • Times: 6:00pm-8:00pm
  • Location: Metro Arts,109 Edward St, Brisbane QLD 4000
  • Bookings: 07 3403 8888.

As a follow up to the event, Peril Magazine is excited to announce that it will be focusing its next edition, Yum Chattier, inviting some of the creatives involved in the event to further comment and share work, and by engaging a group of writers, designers, community development practitioners and members of the public to contribute to the debate and conversation.

Stay tuned for more details in the coming days! In the mean time, don’t forget to book your tickets and to think about what kinds of questions you’d like to ask Asian Australian creative professionals of the ilk of Quan Yeomans, Michelle Law, Joyce Ho, Audrey Lam, Merlynn Tong  and Faramarz K-Rahbar next Tuesday at Metro Arts.
