Our second digital postcard is a short audio recording from Hoi An, where\u00a0WrICE<\/a>(the Writers Immersion and Cultural Exchange Program) residency writers Cate Kennedy, Suchen Christine Lim and Jhoanna Cruz are conversing with WriCE Co-Director Francesca Rendle-Short.\u00a0 Francesca has titled the recording – “Nothing is wasted with writing: promise”.<\/p>\n

Says Francesca in her notes, “The mp3 was recorded as we were waiting to go out for an evening after one of our daily workshops, on the steps of our hotel Long Life Hotel. \"Christine\"<\/a>SUCHEN CHRISTINE LIM\u2019S<\/strong>\u00a0latest novel\u00a0The River\u2019s Song<\/em>\u00a0was launched in Singapore & London this year. The Singapore author has written five novels, a short-story collection, a co-written play, a non-fiction work and fourteen children\u2019s picture books. Her novel
\nFistful of Colours<\/em>\u00a0won the inaugural Singapore Literature Prize In 2012 she received the Southeast Asia Write Award. Other novels are\u00a0Rice Bowl, Gift From The Gods<\/em>, and\u00a0A Bit\u00a0<\/em>of Earth,<\/em>\u00a0and other works include\u00a0The Amah: A Portrait in Black & White, The Lies That\u00a0 <\/em>Build a Marriage, Hua Song: Stories of the Chinese Diaspora<\/em>. Awarded a Fulbright fellowship, she was an International Writing Fellow and writer in residence at the University of Iowa, and a Visiting Fellow in Creative Writing in the Technological University of Singapore. She has also been awarded writing residencies in UK, Australia, S. Korea and the Philippines.<\/p>\n

\"Nien\"<\/a>JHOANNA LYNN B. CRUZ\u00a0<\/strong>is an award-winning\u00a0writer who teaches literature\u00a0and creative writing at the University of the Philippines \u00a0 Mindanao. She completed a Master of Arts in Language and Literature and a Master of Fine Arts in Creative Writing, both with high distinction, from De La Salle University-Manila. Her first book,\u00a0Women Loving. Stories and a Play<\/i>\u00a0published in 2010 is the first sole-author anthology of lesbian-themed stories in the Philippines. Cruz is president of the Davao Writers Guild and is Regional Coordinator for Southern Mindanao in the National Committee on Literary Arts.<\/p>\n

\"Cate\"<\/a>CATE KENNEDY<\/strong> writes across genres, and is published as a novelist, short story author, poet and essayist. Her most recent collection, \u201cLike A House on Fire<\/em>\u201d was published by Scribe in 2012 and went on to win the Queensland Literary Award for best Short Story Collection as well as\u00a0being shortlisted for the inaugural Stella Prize and the Kibble Award. Several of its stories were published in the U.K prior to its publication there through Scribe U.K. and she is appearing at the 2014 International Conference on the Short Story in Vienna in July 2014.\u00a0Her third poetry collection \u2018<\/span>The Taste of River Water<\/em>\u2019 was released by Scribe in 2011, and awarded the Victorian Premier\u2019s Literary Award for Poetry. Her novel \u2018<\/span>The World Beneath<\/em>\u2019 (Scribe, 2009) was shortlisted for the Age Book of the Year Award, the Barbara Jefferis Award and the N.S.W. Premier\u2019s Prize for fiction. It went on to win the \u201cPeople\u2019s Choice\u201d prize in these awards.\u00a0She is currently living in Vanuatu, working on a new novel with the assistance of an Established Writers Australia Council grant, and completing a commissioned novella for GriffithREVIEW. She has also selected and edited the stories for Inkerman and Blunt\u2019s 2014 release \u201cNew Australian Love Stories\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n

\"FRS-screen-JamesMepham<\/a>FRANCESCA RENDLE-SHORT <\/strong><\/strong>is an award-winning novelist, memoirist and essayist, author of the memoir-cum-novel Bite Your Tongue <\/em>(Spinifex) and award-winning novel Imago<\/em>. Recent work has been published in Killing the Buddah<\/em>, The Best Australian Science Writing 2013<\/em> (NewSouth), Just Between Us<\/em> (Pan Macmillan), NANO, TEXT, The Essay Review (University of Iowa), Bumf, New Writing, Life Writing<\/em>. She is an associate professor in the School of Media and Communication at RMIT University, co-director of the nonfictionLab research group and WrICE (Writers Immersion Cultural Exchange). In 2013 she was a writing fellow at the Nonfiction Writing Program in the Department of English at the University of Iowa.
