Channels Festival 2017 officially launches this Friday 1st September! You’re invited to join them at The SUBSTATION from 6pm to celebrate the festival launch and official opening of the group exhibition Future Tense and Australian premiere of A Mountain Close Up is Only Rock by UK artists Kihlberg & Henry.

Exploring the concept ‘futures of’, Channels 2017 showcases new and exciting contemporary moving image by over 90 Australian and international artists across multiple venues around Melbourne. Channels is the only Australian biennial dedicated to presenting video art and culture in a dynamic and inclusive festival of free exhibitions, screenings, workshops and public programs.

Video Visions

Selected from over 470 submissions from around the world, Video Visions draws on contemporary positions in video art to present 17 artists with disparate observations, critiques and reflections on cultural identity, appropriation, gender and joint experiences.

This is a one-night-only installation and performance.
Flygirl is a solo dance installation that reimagines forgotten hip-hop choreographies. It is a performance of choreographic interludes, which samples dance routines performed by the all-female troupe of ‘Fly Girls’ from the 90s US television series, ‘In Living Color.’

Across 13 Australian and international video works, Conditional Surplus considers what kinds of futures the current human condition will shape. Bringing into focus questions about our relationship with memory, space and each other, the three-part program evaluates the strengths and limitations of an increasing digital landscape forged by an obligatory self-focused nature.
